Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana features a different landmark of the month on their website ( www.historiclandmarks.org) every 28-31 days. The one for November, 2004, was the Test Building on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.
Duplicated below is the text and accompanying pictures....
Thanks to the efforts of a curious
and enterprising photographer, the exquisitely detailed carvings on Indianapolis’s Test Building can be enjoyed without
binoculars. (Photos: Silas McGuffers)

Test Building Silas McGuffers had never noticed the stone carvings at the top of the 1925 Test Building, on the southwest side of
Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. Then one day, for no reason, he did. He spied the rectangular stone plaques, placed
just high enough that he wanted a better look. He thought to himself, “Boy it would be great to go up in a bucket truck.”
Months later he happened to be passing by the building when volunteer electricians in bucket trucks were taking down Christmas
decorations. Silas–a photographer–grabbed his camera and begged a ride. Up close, he photographed the carvings
that depict local landmarks like the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ monument, alternating with carvings of airplanes,
cars, and dirigibles. The unknown carver’s commitment to detail included even the clock of the Marion County Courthouse.
